Millennial wonder, Michaela Coel has been on Next Big Thing’s radar since 2014 when #ChewingGum was making its way through London’s West-End as a one-woman show called “Chewing Gum Dreams.” One original Netflix series and a BAFTA Award later, it seems the secret is out: Michaela is a herstory-making Next Big Thing!
Born in East London to Ghanaian parents, Michaela used her experience as “the only” as inspiration to write her senior/graduation project “Chewing Gum Dreams.” The one-woman drama about a 14-year old named Tracey went on to be produced throughout London, and eventually further onto British Network E4 and Netflix as a comedy about a 24-year old named Tracey with wildly, hilarious and all-too-real misadventures.
Michaela is continues to blazing a trail in entertainment: Season 2 has just been released in London on E4. We on this side of the pond anxiously await to find out what’s up next for our new fave Brit who oozes #BlackGirlMagic.
